A The Allman Brothers Band no le gustaba nada posar para los fotógrafos. Les aburrían soberanamente las continuas sesiones fotográficas a las que tenían que someterse, por lo que no mostraban absolutamente ningún interés frente a la cámara. Cuando en 1971 se reunieron para la foto que debía ir en la portada de “At Fillmore East” (Island/Mercury), grabado poco antes, el fotógrafo no conseguía tomarles una instantánea que mereciera la pena. En ese momento, Duane Allman (el tercero por la izquierda), del que ya hemos hablado aquí, se marchó de repente a ver a un amigo y regresó con una bolsita de cocaína.

Cuando Duane regresó, algunos de sus compañeros se percataron del motivo de su escapada y, sin poder evitarlo, se echaron a reír. En ese momento, el fotógrafo aprovechó para disparar su cámara. Aquellos que se habían dado cuenta se dedicaron a revelar a los demás qué era lo que Duane Allman escondía realmente en sus manos en el centro de la fotografía, causa de tanto jolgorio.

Desgraciadamente, 14 días después, el 29 de octubre de 1971, Duane fallece en un accidente de carretera, manejando su Harley Davidson, cuando tan sólo contaba con 24 años. A pesar de su juventud, en 2003 la revista Rolling Stone le situó en la Lista de los 100 guitarristas más grandes de todos los tiempos… ni más ni menos que en el segundo puesto, sólo detrás de Jimi Hendrix.

Una imagen que pasaría a la historia por ser parte del disco considerado como una de las más grandes grabaciones en vivo de la historia de la música rock. Es, además, el número 49 en la lista de los 500 mejores álbumes de todos los tiempos. Y,  no obstante, sigue siendo uno de los más vendidos del catálogo de la banda.
